TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State University head soccer coach Mark
Krikorian announced the hiring of Miranda Armstrong as a volunteer
assistant coach with the women’s soccer program. Armstrong spent the
last four seasons as head coach of the women’s soccer team at Shenandoah
University in Winchester, Va. before arriving in Tallahassee. Her
experience includes a combined eight years as both a head and an
assistant coach as well as five years of playing at the professional
level.
“We are excited to have Miranda join our staff,” said head coach Mark
Krikorian. “She brings with her a wealth of knowledge including previous
head coaching experience. She has had a lot of exciting opportunities in
this game and we are looking forward to her bringing and sharing some of
that knowledge with our team.”
Armstrong has coached at the collegiate level since 1999. She began her
coaching career at Seattle Community College where she helped start the
women’s soccer program serving as an assistant coach for two seasons
before assuming head coaching duties at SCC for a year in 2001.
In 2002, Armstrong moved to the Midwest and found herself at Division II
Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. There she served as an assistant
coach on the women’s soccer and track and field teams. In just one
season at UIU, the Peacocks matched their win total from the previous
season despite having just two seniors on their 13-woman roster.
A year later, Armstrong was named head coach of the women’s soccer
program at Shenandoah University. In four seasons at SU, Armstrong
amassed a record of 28-41-5 (.412) while leading the Hornets to three
straight appearances in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.
Her 28 wins places her second all-time at Shenandoah for career
victories. Under her tutelage, SU earned 18 All-Conference honors
including defender Lauren Carpinello who was named all-conference all
four years. Carpinello was also named a second team Academic
All-District by ESPN the Magazine last year. In 2005, Armstrong guided
the program to its first winning season since 1998 as the Hornets posted
an overall record of 10-8-1, 3-3 in league play to finish fourth in the
USA South. That year, SU placed a school record eight student-athletes
on the USA South All-Conference team while playing host to a first round
game in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament for the first-time
in school history. The 10 wins were the most since 1998 when the Hornets
recorded 12 victories and it was the most conference wins since 1999.
Armstrong’s professional experience stems back to 1998 when she helped
discover the Hibernian and Caledonian Saints women’s team. She played
with the team for four seasons before completing her professional career
in 2002 as she played a season with the Seattle Sounders in the United
Soccer League.
A graduate of Seattle University in 1998, Armstrong played three seasons
of varsity soccer with the Redhawks where she ranks in the top 10 for
career assists, set the school record for assists in a half and was the
recipient for the 1997 Inspirational Award. She also competed in
basketball for one season at Seattle. In 2005, Armstrong completed her
masters’ degree in business administration from Upper Iowa University.
Armstrong holds a National C License with the United States Soccer
Federation and both Goalkeeper and Regional Licenses through the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
