Barry University Women annouce signees

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University has announced the signing of six student-athletes for the Women’s Soccer Team. The six signees comprise a talented and diverse class which should make an immediate and positive effect in the fall. This marks the first full recruiting class under Head Coach Fred Jungemman. The group is compromised of several multisport talents from Oregon, Arizona, Kentucky and three from Florida.
Jungemman states, “This has been an exciting and productive recruiting class for the Barry Women’s Soccer program. We have managed to address nearly every position on our roster. In addition, we were also able to bring in numerous impact players who will continue the resurgence process we have undertaken. I am sure I speak for our entire program when I say that we are excited to get started next fall and anticipate a strong season.”
Sarah Wolfer is a forward/winger hailing from Newberg, Ore. While attending Newberg High School, she earned seven varsity letters in both soccer and track garnering several accolades. As a senior, she was team captain, leading her squad in scoring en route to an Offensive Player of the Year award and 1st team all-conference nod. She was equally successful on the track, earning 1st team all-conference awards for the 200 meter and 4x100 meter events. She possesses a tremendous crossing ability which will add a dangerous new dimension to the Buccaneer offense.
Also coming to Miami Shores in the fall from the west coast is Arizona native, Haley Struthers. Struthers is as fundamentally sound forward with loads of talent.
At Chaparral High, she was a three-sport star in soccer, track and swimming earning 12 varsity letters in all. During her senior campaign she was recognized as a 1st team all-region and 2nd team all-state selection as team captain for the Firebirds. As a freshman she was selected to the 1st team all-region team and set the Chaparral high record for the 800 meter event in track. Struthers brings a ton of speed and strength which should prove to be challenging to opposing defenses.
Ashley Carvalho is a talented defender from Cape Coral, Fla. She is described as a very strong and aggressive athlete who will bring both leadership and tenacity to the defense. At Ida S. Baker High, she earned varsity letters in soccer, track and swimming.
As a senior she was the team captain, earning both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Local media also recognized Carvalho, with the Cape Coral Daily Breeze naming her to the All-Star team and News-Press naming her Player of the Year.

Ashley Brower made a splash in the state of Florida during her only year as student-athlete for Lecanto High. After moving down south from Kentucky, she set a school and county single season scoring record with 72 goals and 36 assists. Those numbers helped her earn a spot in the FACA Senior All-Star game as well as a 1st team all-state recognition. In Kentucky she also had a knack for scoring goals as she set a school single season record for scoring and points during her junior year with 53 goals and 120 points, also earning a 1st team all-state honor and being named Offensive Player of the Year. Brower is a prolific and determined striker with a talent for scoring goals.


Another attacker joining the Buccaneers is Allie Llaneras from Miami Springs, Fla.. During her tenure with the Golden Hawks she was a finalist for 2007 Miami-Dade Athlete of the Year and honored as Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year by the Sports Society. She led the county in scoring with 51 goals and 18 assists as a 1st team all-county performer, her second consecutive honor. Llaneras is a creative and skillful attacking player who is a hard worker and will look to make an immediate impact in the fall.

Ziena Cline, also from Miami rounds out the recruiting class. Cline earned four varsity letters in soccer at Coral Reef High School. She anchored the Barracuda defense garnering 1st team all-county honors as the team captain during her senior year. In 2006 she also earned 1st team all-conference honors as well as being recognized as Defensive Player of the Year. Coach Jungemman touts Cline as an intelligent, strong and skillful defender who is a ferocious competitor.

With these additions to the women’s soccer program looks to be extremely competitive in the soccer rich Sunshine State Conference in the fall.
