Feller and Schade Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars
6/14/2008
Fairfax, Va. – Lynn University student-athletes Natalie Feller and
Christie Schade were honored by Diverse Magazine as 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr.
Sports Scholars for their individual sports. Feller was a first team
selection for women’s soccer while Schade earned second team honors in
women’s volleyball.
Diverse: Issues in Higher Education established the Sports Scholars
Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving
both academically and athletically a winning combination. To be
included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain
a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.2; and be active on
their campuses or in their communities.
In her first season as the full-time starter, Feller posted a 6-8-0
record with three shutouts, 61 saves and a 1.38 goals-against average.
Her 61 saves were the sixth most in program history for a single season.
In addition, the Elementary Education major with a 3.82 cumulative GPA
was selected as President of the Sunshine State Conference
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and will serve on the NCAA’s National
SAAC.
Schade had an outstanding season as libero, helping the Fighting Knights
to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance, including a 3-1 victory
in the first round over Eckerd College. The junior from Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla., set career-highs for games and matches played while finishing with
the second most digs in program history (547). Schade also became just
the third Knight to eclipse 1,000 career digs. Off the court the
criminal justice major posted a 3.53 cumulative GPA and was elected the
new Lynn SAAC President after serving as the Chief of SAAC last year.
Former men’s basketball player James Taylor was previously elected as an
Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar in 2004-05.
