Wellington start fast at Regionals
6/20/08
Soccerfla.com Flash Report:
The Wellington Wave U16 boys got off to a terrific start today in
opening play of the Southern Regional Championships by beating NWA
Lightning. The team started the tournament with great energy and worked
well as a team, scoring 3 quick goals in the first half to procure a 3-0
lead, only allowing a single scoring chance for the other team. With a
30 minute lightning delay, the team came out a little flat in the 2nd
half and the Arkansas team capitalized on costly mistakes to lessen the
lead to 3-2. Once the Wave settled down and got back into a rhythm,
they put the game away with a fourth goal in the last five minutes. "It
is always great to start this type of competition with a win" said Coach
Patrick Zoete, "this puts our fate in our own hands". They face a tough
Texas team tomorrow and hope the momentum of this win will continue.
Comments from the Lightning:
Wellington (Fla. ) Wave Premier 4, NWA Lightning 2 RALEIGH. N. C. - The
NWA Lightning'92 Strikers got off to a slow start in the U 16 Boys'
division of pool play but made things interesting late.
Still, a 3-0 first-half hole was too deep to climb out of and the
Strikers lost 4-2 to the Florida state champion Wellington Wave Premier
at the WRAL Soccer Complex.
Spencer Dunlop scored two second-half goals as the Strikers pulled to
within 3-2, but Wellington added an insurance goal with 10 minutes left
to set the final score.
"Exciting second half," said Strikers coach Tony Dawes. "We played very
well against a quality team."
The game was delayed briefly by rain.
