Men’s Soccer Scores Lopsided Win over Barry
Miami Gardens, Fla. – Lynn University’s men’s soccer team showed why it
is the second ranked team in the nation with a 5-1 victory over
penultimate rival No. 7 Barry University Saturday. The Fighting Knights
scored the most goals and recorded the largest margin of victory over
the Buccaneers since winning 10-0 in 1993. Jean Alexandre tallied his
first career hat trick while Kyle Conrad pitched in with two goals. Lynn
improves to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The Blue and White now own a 17-7-1 all-time mark against Barry and
improve to 10-0-1 in SSC openers.
Three close shots by LU and another by Barry got the packed crowd to its
feet within the first 10 minutes of the contest. Conrad quickly settled
the crowd down in the 20th minute with his third goal of the year. The
Bucs (6-1, 0-1 SSC) attempted to clear a corner kick from James Hayers
but the ball settled right to the foot of the sophomore midfielder.
Conrad let loose a shot from the top of the box, through traffic, and
into the left side netting for a 1-0 lead.
Emotions ran high the rest of the half as neither team could maintain
its momentum. Barry would push through the Knights zone only to be
turned away by the defensive unit of Lee Porter, Sam Craven, Joe Cundall
and Hayers. Meanwhile, Lynn’s attempts on goal were also held in check
by the Bucs defense.
Alexandre finally broke free near the end of the half when Gabe Taboada
slipped a ball inside the box. The Knights senior forward put the shot
away nicely for the eventual game-winning goal.
Trying to keep the pendulum swinging in their favor, Conrad struck again
58 seconds into the second half. Tyrell Burgess snuck past the
Buccaneers defense and sent a high cross from the left corner flag. The
ball sailed over keeper Devala Gorrick and Conrad nailed an unchecked
header into goal, putting LU up 3-0.
Playing for pride, Barry was determined to get on the board. Down by
three with 10 minutes to go, Barry’s Mark Anderson was fouled just
outside the Knights touch line. As Lynn was setting up its wall,
Anderson quickly fired off a shot inside the left post for the goal.
Not taking too kindly to the loss of a shutout, LU poured on the
scoring. Alexandre found the back of the net twice in a 1:41 span, the
last of which came off a header from Tom Hope and Hayers.
Gorrick posted 10 saves while Adam Alcock made three stops in the
winning effort. Lynn out shot Barry 26-9 and notched an 8-4 edge in
corner kicks.
The Fighting Knights return to action Wednesday, September 23, at 3 p.m.
when it hosts Palm Beach Atlantic. Fans can follow the action live by
