Women's soccer falls in overtime to East Tennessee State, 2-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Sept. 26, 2008 Sophomore midfielder Kelly Brinkman scored her first goal of the season in overtime to give East Tennessee State a 2-1 victory over the JU women's soccer team in the Atlantic Sun Conference action on Friday night at the Ashley Sports Complex.

The Buccaneers (3-4-0, 1-0-0 A-Sun) broke a four- match losing streak to gain their first conference win, while the Dolphins (3-5-1, 0-1-0) have dropped their last two overtime matches at home.

"We put out a good effort tonight," said JU head coach Brian Copham. "It was a game of shifting momentum. We ended the second half with momentum after scoring in the 70th minute and felt like we could win it in overtime. It just didn't work out in us. Overall, I liked our effort, but we have to find a way to finish it."

After a scoreless first half, sophomore forward Terri Miller scored on a cross from Brinkman and sophomore forward Rachel Van Horn to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute.

The Dolphins tied the match less than 10 minutes later when sophomore defender Devon Dowell scored her second goal of the season on a deflection after the ball bounced off the top post from a shot by sophomore midfielder Sian Senior.

Senior forward Keri Zwikker had a shot at goal with less than 10 seconds remaining, but freshman goalie Megan Masch made the save for ETSU. Freshman forward Jessica Hurtado followed with a shot after the save and it went wide to send the match to overtime.

Less than two minutes into the overtime, Brinkman hit a shot in the lower 90 of the net from 10 yards out to give the Buccaneers the win.

Masch (3-4-0) made eight saves to secure the win in the nets, while freshman goalie Alex Rooney (3-4-1) recorded six stops in the loss for JU.
