Women's soccer edges Mercer, 1-0
Senior defender Katie Orr scores goal for JU in win
MACON, Ga. Oct. 5, 2008 Senior defender Katie Orr and sophomore defender
Devon Dowell usually help the Dolphins keep goals out defensively, but
they used their offensive skills to guide the JU women's soccer team
past Mercer, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference action
at Bear Field in Macon, Ga.
Orr recorded her first goal of the season on a pass from Dowell with
less then a minute remaining in the first half to give the Dolphins
(5-6-1, 2-2 A-Sun) all the offense they needed. The backline duo also
helped the Dolphins hold the Bears (5-4-3, 2-1-1) to only five shots on
goal.
"Overall, it was another excellent team effort," said JU head coach
Brian Copham. "We played a great match against a very good physical
squad. Mercer is a well-coached team and came out with good intensity in
the second half, but I was pleased with the way we defended against
them. In this conference, there is no easy game and I'm happy we got the
win today."
The Bears out shot the Dolphins, 8-to-3, in the second half, but
freshman goalie Alexa Rooney made three of her five saves between the
nets to earn her fourth shutout of the season.
Junior goalie Jean Worts made four stops in the first half for the Bears
before giving way to freshman goalie Cristina Guilarte, who didn't face
any shots in the second frame.
The Dolphins return to action on Friday as they travel to DeLand, Fla.
for an A-Sun match against Stetson. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
