Women's soccer falls at Stetson, 5-1
Hatters add three second-half goals to get win
DeLAND, Fla. Oct. 10, 2008 Stetson rallied to take a one-goal lead at
half time and scored three second-half goals en route to a 5-1 victory
over the JU women's soccer team on Friday night in Atlantic Sun
Conference action at the Stetson Soccer Complex.
Sophomore forward Tessa Gavilsky scored two of the five goals in the
Hatters (5-5-2, 3-1) victory, while the Dolphins (5-7-1, 2-3) were held
to six shots in the match.
"We didn't play very sharp tonight," said JU head coach Brian Copham.
"We weren't ready to go tonight and I take full reasonability for that.
Stetson proved why they were tough to play at home. Sunday's match will
be a true test of our character and I'm confident we will be up for the
challenge."
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when sophomore forward
Jelena Vrcelj scored in the upper left corner of the net from the third
assist of the season by senior forward Keri Zwikker.
Senior midfielder Bethany Kiedis tied the match for the Hatters less
than two minutes after her long shot was deflected high over JU freshman
goalie Alexa Rooney and bounced in off the crossbar.
The Hatters received a 2-1 lead on Gavilsky's seventh goal of the season
in the 43rd minute. She gave the Hatters a commanding 3-1 advantage less
than 10 minutes into the second half after scoring from five on yards
out on a pass by sophomore midfielder Katie Bitetto.
Sophomore defender Kristen Higel scored her first goal of the season on
pass from Kiedis at 79:33, while freshman midfielder Crossley Simmons
scored in the 82nd minute to wrap the Hatters' scoring.
Stetson sophomore goalie Andrea Garavaglia tallied three saves between
the posts in the win. Rooney made six stops in the loss for JU.
The Dolphins look to bounce back in A-Sun play on Sunday as they host
Florida Gulf Coast at the Ashley Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 2
p.m.
