FSU remains unbeaten
9/5/08
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Fourth-ranked Florida State (4-0-0) remained
undefeated on the year blanking Florida International (0-4-0) 5-0 Friday
evening at the Seminole Soccer Complex in front of a crowd of 1,014.
Five different student-athletes scored for the Seminoles including
Lauren Switzer and Tori Huster who each tallied a goal and an assist.
Huster and fellow freshman Toni Pressley knocked in their first
collegiate goal in the win.
FSU posted its third shutout of the season as the Seminole defense held
the Golden Panthers without a shot in the first half and just three
shots overall. On the offensive side, the Seminoles recorded a
season-high 27 shots while nine different players registered a point.
The victory pushed Florida State's regular season, non-conference
winning streak to 13 straight games.
"Overall it was a good performance," added head coach Mark Krikorian. "I
give Florida International an awful lot of credit. They came out, worked
hard and are very well coached. They were very organized. We had some
difficulty breaking them down but over the course of time we cleared
some decent changes."
"It was a game for us that we wanted to come out and establish the
tempo," added Krikorian. "We wanted to maintain control, keep the ball
and attack as we wanted. I thought for the most part we did that
tonight."
Switzer got the Seminole offense going in the 31st minute scoring off a
beautiful cross from senior Katrin Schmidt. Schmidt, dribbling down the
left side of the pitch, sent a cross inside the box where Switzer timed
her jump perfectly putting away a header into the upper right corner for
her third goal of the season. The assist for Schmidt was her first of
the season and 17th of her career moving her into sole possession of
ninth place all-time in the Seminole record books.
Over five minutes later, the Seminoles pushed their lead to 2-0 on the
first goal of the season by Rachel Lim. Becky Edwards started the play
sending a great ball between two FIU defenders to a streaking Erika
Sutton down the right side of the pitch. Sutton made an inside move
finding Sanna Talonen at the top of the goal box. Talonen redirected the
ball to Lim, who one-timed a low blast under a diving Melanie Raimo.
Raimo barely got a hand on the shot, but it wasn't enough as the ball
trickled over the goal line and into the back of the net. The assists
for Talonen and Sutton were their first of the season.
With a two-goal lead at halftime, the Seminoles quickly added to their
lead in the 47th minute on Huster's first collegiate goal. Marissa
Kazbour recorded an assist on the play finding a streaking Huster on the
right side of the pitch. The freshman midfielder chipped a shot from 14
yards out over the out stretched arms of Raimo for the score.
"We came out after the half wanting to keep the momentum going and score
early and we did," said Huster. "It was nice to get that first one out
of the way. It was pretty exciting. It definitely helped calm me down a
little bit."
In the 66th minute, Huster added to her team leading third assist of the
season as she found Pressley for her first collegiate goal to increase
the Florida State lead to 4-0. Pressley scored on a header as Huster
sent a cross from the far end line into the box.
"It felt really good to score my first goal," explain Pressley. "It was
a relief to finally get one and hopefully I can keep it going and score
some more."
Less than three minutes later, the Seminoles would tack on their fifth
goal of the evening on a header by Tiffany McCarty. Off a great corner
kick by Switzer, McCarty redirected the kick into the right side of the
net for her third goal of the season.
McCarty and Pressley led all players with six shots.
Kate Milstead made her fourth straight start in goal of the Seminoles
and moved to 4-0-0 as she played over 51 minutes. Kimmy Diaz tallied a
career-high 38 minutes between the posts Friday night as she kept the
shutout in tact making a brilliant diving save in the 70th minute.
Florida State remained undefeated against FIU running its all-time
record to 6-0-0. With five more goals on Friday, the Seminoles have now
outscored the opposition 17-1 this year.
The Seminoles return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon as Florida State
takes on intra-start rival Florida at 4:30 pm at the Seminole Soccer
Complex. The game between the Seminoles and Gators will air live across
the entire state on FSN Florida. Admission to all home games is free
