Lynn Women’s Soccer Comeback Bid Falls Short

9/12/09

Milledgeville, Ga. – A late comeback attempt by the Lynn University’s women’s soccer team fell just short as it fell 3-2 to 11th-ranked Carson-Newman at the Little Feet Invitational. The Fighting Knights gave the Eagles a battle with C-N allowing the most goals all season. Senior Amanda Romeo-Gallo scored the first goal of her career while Melissa Ortiz found the back of the net for the team-leading third time this year. Lynn drops to 3-2 overall

Carson-Newman (5-0) jumped on the scoreboard just four minutes into the match when Nikki Brannen deflected in a cross from Andrea Saevik on the right sideline. The Eagles then headed into the locker room with a 2-0 advantage after Morgan Gruenenfelder knocked in a goal from a crossing shot.

Lynn spotted C-N a 3-0 lead in the 56th minute of play from a corner kick but fought to get back in the game. Head coach Chip Dutchik made a tactical adjustment to move to a 3-3-4 formation and it paid dividends almost immediately when Ortiz broke through the Eagles’ defense and slipped a shot past their keeper.

Romeo-Gallo brought LU closer to squaring things up in the 83rd minute. Brittany Evernden fired a shot from outside the box forcing back-up goalie Shannon Clancy to make a diving stop. Romeo-Gallo was right there for the rebound, easily knocking in for her first career goal. Evernden leads Lynn with four assists.

The Knights made their final push in the waning moments of the half and thought they had tied the game up but an offsides call thwarted their momentum and ended the match. Carson-Newman only outshot LU by a total of 14-12 while the Blue & White managed four corner kicks to C-N’s three.

Lynn returns to action on Sunday, September 13, at 11 a.m. when it takes on Tusculum.
