Lynn Women’s Soccer Mauls Lions

9/16/09

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University’s women’s soccer team nipped its two-game losing streak in the bud with a 3-0 victory over Florida Memorial on Wednesday afternoon. Brittany Evernden tallied a goal and assist while the Fighting Knights defense held the Lions to just two shots, none of which made it on target. Lynn improves to 4-3 overall.

Crisp, accurate passes zipped around Florida Memorial’s (2-2) defense to start the Blue & White effort. A wonderful pass by Breanna Heising in the eighth minute gave fruition to the hard work when her cross from near midfield on the left wing landed just atop the box where Melissa Ortiz dummied her way past, letting the ball trickle through. Romeo-Gallo gobbled up the ball and beat Lions’ keeper Katelyn Butler to the near post for the score. Having gone 55 games without scoring a goal, the senior midfielder has scored twice in the last three matches.

The Knights were kept off the board for the rest of the half, despite outshooting FMU 14-2. The second period proved much more offensive-minded for LU as it outshot the Lions 16-0 while scoring twice.

Sarah Mendelsberg found the back of the net five minutes after heading out of halftime. Tessa Craver began the play with a pass to Evernden on top of the 18-yard box. She side-stepped one defender and slipped in a low pass to the senior midfielder. Mendelsberg turned left on the defender and ripped a shot inside the left post for a 2-0 lead.

That scoring duo would find each other again in the 61st minute of play, this time reversed as Mendelsberg combined on a give-and go and Evernden lofted a shot over the keepers head for the goal. Returning from an injury that kept her out of the 2008 season, Evernden has set career-highs for assists (six) and points (10) already.

Lynn picked up the pace on defense after allowing eight goals in its last two contests. Anchored by Mindy DeCara, LU held Florida Memorial without a shot in the second half.

The Fighting Knights hope to carry this momentum into their Saturday game against Nova Southeastern. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m. Fans can follow all of the action live by logging on to www.lynn.edu/athletics and selecting the "live audio" and "live stats" links.
