FSU Falls At Wake Forest

The Seminoles drop their first ACC contest of the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Fifth-ranked Florida State (10-2-0, 3-1-0 ACC) suffered its first ACC loss of the season falling to No. 9 Wake Forest (10-2-1, 2-1-1 ACC) 3-0 Thursday night at Spry Stadium.



Jill Hutchinson scored twice for the Demon Deacons as it was the first loss for the Seminoles against a nationally ranked opponent this year. FSU entered Thursday night’s contest 5-0-0 against ranked teams including a 4-0-0 mark against teams ranked in the top 10.



The three goals were the most given up by FSU this year. The last time the Seminoles allowed three goals in a game was in a 3-3 tie to South Carolina back on September 14, 2008. It also marked the second time this year the Garnet and Gold was held without a goal.



“You have to give credit to Wake Forest,” said head coach Mark Krikorian. “I thought they were the better team tonight. They played harder than we did and they took advantage of their chances.”



Jessica Price led the way for Florida State with four shots including two shots on goal in 69 minutes of action.



Wake Forest broke a scoreless tie with just over three minutes remaining in the first half on a goal from Kaley Fountain. Fountain took a pass from Ally Berry and fired a shot inside the right post from 17 yards out for her eighth goal of the season.



Florida State managed just four shots in the first 45 minutes as three of those shots came off the foot of Price. The Libertyville, Ill., native registered the first shot of the game for both teams in the third minute of action but it was blocked by the Demon Deacon defense. Her second shot was on frame in the 22nd minute, but Wake keeper Amanda Barasha was there for the save.



Seminole keeper Erin McNulty kept the Deacs off the scoreboard in the 15th minute recording a save off a shot by Bianca D’Agostino.



The Deacs outshot the Seminoles 7-4 in the first half, while also holding a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. The one-goal deficit marked the first time the Seminoles trailed at the half all season.



Florida State came out of the locker room looking for the equalizer with three shots in the first nine minutes, but could not find the back of the net.



Wake extended its lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute on its first shot of the second half. Hutchinson received a through ball from Sadow and then beat a charging McNulty, who came out to make a play on the ball, slipping a shot inside the right post for her ninth goal of the season.



Less than four minutes later, the Demon Deacons almost made it a three-goal lead but Fountain’s shot caromed off the crossbar.



In the 70th minute, the Seminoles were kept off the scoreboard as a shot by Tiffany McCarty ricocheted off the post.



Hutchinson gave the Deacs a 3-0 lead in the 77th minute as she scored her second goal of the evening. The senior forward one-timed a shot into the back of the net off a cross from Jordan Feger.



“I felt we were a little naïve in the way he played tonight, but the good news is we get a chance to come back and compete again in a few days,” explained Krikorian.
