Lynn Men’s Soccer Sneaks Past Florida Southern
10/24/09
Lakeland, Fla. – Lynn University’s men’s soccer team escaped with a 2-1
victory over Florida Southern on Saturday night. Sam Craven logged his
second goal of the season while an own goal in the 61st minute gave the
20th ranked Fighting Knights the win. Lynn improves to 13-3 overall and
4-3 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The Blue & White found themselves trailing 1-0 just minutes into the
match after the refs awarded Florida Southern (1-11, 1-6 SSC) a penalty
kick following a hand ball in the box. Alessandro Salvatore made the
initial save off the ensuing shot but Givi Kokaia went after his missed
attempt and knocked in the rebound for the goal.
Craven squared things at one at 15:12 of the first half with a header
off a corner kick. Scott McCubbin out-swung his pass from the right
corner and Craven jumped over his defender for the goal.
A little bit of luck carried LU to victory in the 61st minute. The
Knights were deep in Moccasins territory on the attack when a Florida
Southern defender’s clearance attempt deflected off a teammate and
ricocheted into the net for a Lynn goal.
The Mocs gave one last push in the 80th minute when Jovaughn Howard
broke loose in the middle of the LU defense and ripped a shot from 20
yards out toward the left post. Salvatore made a diving save to send it
wide and the Mocs were called for offside on the follow-up attempt. Lynn
eventually ran out the clock without allowing another shot.
Salvatore made three saves compared to Johan Jonsson’s four. Overall the
Blue & White outshot the Red & Blue 13-6 while taking 11 corners to
their three.
The Fighting Knights close out the regular season on Thursday, October
29, at 3 p.m. when they host longtime rival Barry. Fans can follow the
