29 CLEARWATER CHARGERS SIGN TO PLAY COLLEGE SOCCER
2/3/10
CLEARWATER, Florida – The Clearwater Soccer club is proud to announce
that 17 members of the U-18 Girls team, one member of the U-17 Girls
team and 11 members of the U-18 Boys U.S. Soccer Development Academy
team have signed to play college soccer next season. The 29 players
comprise the largest group of signees in Clearwater Soccer Club’s
history.
In a special ceremony tonight at the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa, the
players were on hand to sign for their respective schools as they
prepare for the next chapter of their academic and athletic lives.
“We're extremely proud of all the players from Clearwater Soccer Club
who are moving on to compete at the next level," said Clearwater
Director of Coaching Peter Mannino. "The ultimate purpose of the club is
to prepare a student/athlete - which means pushing our players to have a
strong focus on academics and a strong work ethic. We strive to create
the discipline that helps them balance the demands of academics, soccer
and social activities, so they are ready to take responsibility and be
accountable.”
More than 450 Clearwater Soccer Club alumni have gone on to play college
soccer since the club was founded in 1972.
The U-18 Boys U.S. Soccer Development Academy team is coached by Garth
Pollonais, Director of the Clearwater U.S. Soccer Development Academy,
Andy Rafferty, Peter Goulish and Peter Mannino. The U-18 Girls are
coached by Mike Mannino and Oscar Ubillus, and the U-17 Girls are
coached by Sergei Stopek and Sergio Rapuano.

Founded in 1972, Clearwater Soccer Club is the oldest competitive soccer
club in West Central Florida. In its history the club has captured a
pair of National Championships (1995 & 1997 James P. McGuire Cup, U-19
Boys), more than 100 Florida State Championships and 11 Region III
titles. It is also the only club in Florida to have made 11 National
Final Four appearances.
In addition to the NCAA, former Chargers can currently be found playing
in MLS, European professional leagues and for several U.S. National
Teams.
The Clearwater Soccer Club competitive soccer program focuses on the
development of the “total player” – one who possesses not only
individual skills and talent, but displays good sportsmanship, team
unity and community loyalty.
