GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast
Conference and Commissioner John D. Swofford announced Wednesday,
February 24, the honorees for this year’s All-ACC Women’s Soccer
Academic Team. Florida State tied a school record placing six
student-athletes on this year’s squad as Becky Edwards, Tori Huster,
Marissa Kazbour, Tiffany McCarty, Erin McNulty and Jessica Price were
all recognized in 2009.
The ACC honored six student-athletes on
the Academic Team back in 2007 and since the award’s inception in 2005,
the league has recognized 23 players from Florida State.
Edwards
is one of four student-athletes on this year’s squad to hold the
distinction as a four-time honoree on the All-ACC Academic Team. She
joins Katrin Schmidt as the only other four-time honoree in Florida
State history. Joining Edwards as a four-time honoree in 2009 are
Whitney Engen of North Carolina, Kristi Eveland of North Carolina and
Allie Sadow of Wake Forest. Kazbour is making an appearance on the
All-Academic Team for the third time in her college career.
All
11 league schools that compete in women’s soccer are represented on the
ACC All-Academic Team, which includes four players that were named
first-, second- or third-team All-America and both the ACC Defensive
Player of the Year (Whitney Engen) and the Offensive Player of the Year
(Tiffany McCarty).
The 2009 ACC All-Academic Team also includes
11 players that were named first- or second-team All-ACC and six members
of the ACC All-Freshman Team. Eighteen members of the All-Academic Team
were named Academic All-District by ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA, and four
were named Academic All-America by the NSCAA or ESPN The
Magazine/CoSIDA.
To be eligible for consideration, a
student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the
previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her
academic career.
Florida State and Duke led all schools with six
academic selections a piece. Three schools followed with five honorees
including North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Miami placed
four student-athletes on this year’s time, while Maryland and Virginia
each earned three selections. NC State collected a pair and Boston
College and Clemson rounded out the 41-member squad with one nod a
piece.
North Carolina’s Whitney Engen was the recipient of the
2009 ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
In 2009, Edwards
became the Seminoles’ first two-time, first-team Scholar All-American
from the NSCAA. She also earned the distinction of becoming Florida
State’s first Academic All-American at the national level. The
Downingtown, Pa., native was named a third team All-American by
CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine.
Edwards, Huster, Kazbour and McNulty
were all named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic District III
team this past year. Edwards earned first team honors, while Huster was
named to the second team. McNulty and Kazbour were recognized on the
third team.
