U9s Win Rivalry Match
Delray Beach, Florida (January 22, 2006) - One of the best rivalries in u9
soccer resumed today at Old Atlantic High School in Delray Beach. The two teams,
facing off for the fifth time, had another exciting match. Delray entered the game
on a nine game winning streak.
Sunrise won this contest 2-1. The last time Delray
did not win a game was when they tied Sunrise at the Plantation Thanksgiving
tournament in November. This was a close game and both teams had opportunities.
Sunrise got on the board first about 15-minutes into the game when Melissa
Curran was tripped by a Delray defender as she was about to bring the ball into
the box. Mary Amos took the subsequent kick and found a seam towards the far
post for the first goal. The half ended with Sunrise up 1-0.
In the second half, at about 35 minutes, the Delray keeper threw the ball out
but Julia Jaffe intercepted it and raced with it into the box and made a great
shot towards the far left post to give Sunrise the 2-0 lead.
Delray kept pounding away in the remaining 15 minutes but the Sunrise defense
remained steadfast and refused to bend. That was until the very last minute of
the game. Delray had three corner kicks in succession and on the last one, with
about 30 seconds remaining, a Delray forward shot the ball off of the rebound
and found an opening by the near post.
The game ended a few seconds later and Sunrise won by the 2-1 final. The
Sunrise/Delray record now stands even at 2-2-1.
