Work Hard, GET GOOD

The 9s and 10s Go 3-0-1 on the Day at the Region A Jamboree

Weston, Florida (March 5, 2006) – Both the u10 and u9 girls teams had a fun-filled day of soccer at the Region A jamboree and displayed a lot of heart that has become the hallmark of Sunrise soccer.

10s Win Two

The u10s opened up against Miami Springs. Despite dominating the first half, the 10s found themselves trailing Springs by a 2-0 margin at halftime.

The 10s came out in the second half and this time finished the opportunities that were presented to them. Athena Saunders and Danielle Westerlind scored a goal each to tie the game at 2. Then Julie Konners nailed the winner for the 3-2 win.

That set the stage for the 10s next game against the winner of the Miami Premier/Pinecrest contest. The 10s ended up playing Miami Premier. This was a close game and was 0-0 with 10 minutes remaining. Natalie Montemorano hurt her ankle in the first half so the team found itself in the familiar position of playing a game with no subs. With 10 minutes remaining, Caitlin Crespo crossed the ball to Danielle Westerlind, who knocked it in for the 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Julie Konners scored from about 18 yards out, and then Brittany Macaluso topped off the game with a penalty kick to give the 10s the 3-0 win.

Alena Abouhana played all over the field during both games, including goalkeeper, and was solid throughout. Natalie did a good job playing goalkeeper today, and created several scoring opportunities also.

The Comeback Kids Do it Again

The 9s played Miami Lakes in the first game and won 5-0. The second game was against Wellington. The team did not play well at the beginning and Wellington really jumped all over the 9s, taking a 3-0 lead inside of 15 minutes.

The girls managed to get one back before halftime to make it 3-1 on a Julia Jaffe goal. In the second half, offensive pressure applied by Melissa Curran and Julia Jaffe in the Wellington box caused an “own goal” by Wellington to make the game 3-2. Then with about 4 minutes remaining, Jaffe crossed the ball and Curran scored to tie the game at 3-3. With about two minutes remaining, the 9s had a free kick from about 15 yards out. Jaffe shot the ball for Sunrise and the ball hit the cross bar. The rebound went back to Julia and she fired again, and again, it bounced off the cross bar. This exciting game ended with a 3-3 tie.

Sydney Talbot played very well for the 9s as the second half keeper. She had about 4 saves that kept Sunrise in the game. Valerie Weinbrum played hard and was effective at both forward and defender. Rylee did not feel well but continued to hang on and had an excellent second half. Taylor Shore played for just a few moments today, as she attended the game with a 102 degree fever. She refused to stay home because she knew we would have no subs if she did not come out.

This was the second time the team came back from a 3-0 deficit against Wellington. Just last week, in a friendly scrimmage, the girls scored three goals in the final 10-minutes to tie this very good Wellington team.
