Sunrise Soccer Club Brings Home Three Championships

U14 Boys, U14 Girls and U10 Girls all win

11/26/06

The Sunrise Soccer Club won three championships at the Plantation Thanksgiving Classic this weekend. A pretty good performance for a club that only had four entries in the tournament.

The new u14 boys team, playing in only their second tournament, won the Gold division. The team had victories over Team Boca (2-1), Cape Coral (5-0) and Naples (10-0) in preliminary play. In the semi-finals, the u14s defeated Strictly Soccer 3-0 and then went on to top East Broward for the title. The team is coached by Pedro Magallanes. Magallanes played for the Argentinian National team in the mid 80s.

The u10 Sunrise Sting girls also won the Gold title over rival Delray by a 2-1 score. After dropping the opener to Delray, Sunrise needed to win the next two to advance to the final. The girls defeated the PSN Patriots 6-1 and then had to face off against a tough West Pines team. Sunrise jumped out to a 1-0 lead but Pines tied the game in the second half. Sunrise scored the winning goal with four minutes remaining to get another shot at Delray.

In the title game, Delray took a 1-0 lead early in the second half.  But with ten minutes remaining, Julia Jaffe made a through pass into the far right side of the box where Dallas Dorosy caught up to it  and then launched a rocket that caught the underside of the cross bar, bounced almost directly down, where Jaffe and Taylor Shore quickly caught up to it and Jaffe knocked it in to tie the game. Then with about three minutes remaining, Jaffe received the ball at half line, beat two defenders down the middle of the field and fired a shot inside the right post for the winning goal.

The Sunrise offense, helped by a sharp passing game, was potent all day long, generating 17 shots from seven different players and from all five field positions. But the win would not have been accomplished without great defense, led by Brittany Simpson, Rylee Simons and Melissa Curran, with significant help from Sydney Talbot, Valerie Weinbrum and goalkeeper Mary Amos, that limited Delray's opportunities. Jaylie Jensen was out for the championship game but did play well in the preliminary games. Angie Bensen was out with an injury. For the Sting, this was their sixth tournament championship since April, their seventh overall, and the tenth time in eleven tournaments that they have reached the championship game. Sunrise and Delray have now played each other seven times, with each team winning three games. One game was a tie.

The u14 girls Select team won the Blue division at the tournament. The girls had wins over Weston Select (5-0), Strictly Soccer (4-1) and Cooper City (1-0). The girls played Weston Select for the championship. Sunrise held a 2-0 lead with about 12 minutes remaining when Weston mounted a furious comeback to tie the game with literally seconds remaining. The game remained tied through overtime sending it into PKs. Sunrise goalkeeper Rebecca Rogers made three saves and goals by Haleigh Stremanos, Alexis Shaw and Danille Nguyen sealed the victory.

Goals by game for the Select team:

Game 1 vs. Weston Select 5-0 victory Goals: Stremanos 2, Rincon 2, Nguyen 1
Game 2 vs Strictly Soccer 4-1 victory Goals: Stremanos 2, Llorca 1, Kripitzer 1
Game 3 vs Cooper City 1-0 victory Goal: Stremanos 1
