TAMPA – The United Soccer Leagues Super Y-League announced today the selections
for the 2006 Super Y-League North American Finals Teams. First and Second team
selections represent the top individual performances of teams who continued
their regional achievements with success at the top youth soccer league in North
America.
Melissa Camacho and Rebecca Rogers, players on the Sunrise U14 Premier team,
were first-team selections. They both played Super-Y on the Kendall team coached
by Sunrise coach Gus Camacho. The team was made up primarily with players from
Sunrise and Kendall.
Selections were based on the evaluation of the opposing coaching staffs during
head-to-head play and were calculated by the USL for final selection. As part of
the Super Y-League Olympic Development Program (ODP) system, the North American
Finals is an approved ODP event of US Soccer. Players selected to the All-Super
Y-League North American Finals First Team earn invitations to the Super Y-League
ODP National Camp, where they will be further evaluated by US National Team
Staff. Players named MVP of the North American Finals also gain instant access
to the exclusive event.
The North American Finals, held in conjunction with United Soccer Leagues Annual
General Meeting, was a resounding success on several fronts. For the first time
in Super Y-League history teams from the U.S. Soccer hotbed of Southern
California tested their alleged supremacy against the rest of North American
Soccer. Southern California held true on the girls’ side of the pitch, winning
four of the five divisions. The remainder of the United States and Canada held
their own in the most competitive finals to date.
“The Super Y-League North American Finals was a great experience for these
girls,” added West Coast FC Head Coach Gus Castaneda. “We have 15 girls
committed to colleges, some on the east coast such as UNC Greensboro so it was a
chance for some of them to get a taste of what is coming. It was a great
facility and we saw teams we never played before. We are looking forward to
bringing more teams next year if we win the opportunity.”
