Sunrise U10s (96/97) Win Orange Classic
U14 Premier Team Finishes in Second in Bracket
Plantation, Florida (December 30, 2006) - The Sunrise Sting U10 (96/97) girls
won the Orange Classic in a tight game by defeating West Pines 1-0. Both teams
went 4-0 in bracket play. The championship match set up the tournament's leading
offensive team, West Pines, scoring 30 goals, against the leading defensive
team, Sunrise, allowing just one.
Sunrise got off to a good start and was moving the ball around well. At the
4-minute mark, Sunrise got off their second shot of the game when Brittany
Simpson took the ball away from a Pines forward in the back third and passed it to Melissa Curran
just short of the halfline on the right side of the field. Curran took the ball
further down the field and sent a pass direct to the feet of Dallas Dorosy at
the top of the right side of the 18. Dorosy expertly fielded the ball and passed it further to the
left inside of the box where Julia Jaffe hit a shot that was saved by the Pines
keeper. One minute later, Sunrise had another great opportunity when keeper Mary
Amos sent a goal kick down to the halfline where Julia Jaffe battled a Pines
player and ended up with the ball on the left side, she sent a pass right to
Dorosy who ran with the ball down the far side of the box with a Pines defender
on her back. Dorosy got off a flat angle shot that went just over the cross bar.

At the 9-minute mark, Pines cleared the ball from the top of the box but a
waiting Rylee Simons intercepted the ball at the halfline for the Sting and sent
the ball forward to Dorosy who found herself in a 1 v 2 situation. Dorosy
managed to squeeze the ball out to the left where Jaffe hit the ball on a volley
inside the right post for the only goal of the game.
Pines had an excellent opportunity in the 31st minute when Danielle Antieau took the ball down the right side, made a sharp cut to the left
to beat a Sunrise midfielder and crossed the ball to Carissa Sanchez who got off
a nice shot that was saved by Amos.
Throughout the tournament, seven different players scored goals for Sunrise - Mary Amos, Dallas Dorosy, Julia Jaffe, Jaylie Jensen,
Taylor Shore, Brittany Simpson and Valerie Weinbrum. And six of these seven had
multiple goals. Angie Bensen, seeing action for only the second time since
recovering from a 2-month injury, got in some valuable time.
