U11s Stay Alive in Playoff Hunt, U14 Select Ties

Sunrise, Florida (January 28, 2007) - The U11 Sting battled Cooper City on Saturday in an important FLUGSA game. Sunrise entered the game in third place with a 5-3 record and Cooper City was just behind at 5-4-0. The top four teams make the playoffs. This turned into a good contest as both teams got off lots of shots in an evenly played game but Sunrise had the good luck of putting two into the net and allowing zero.

At the 20:00 minute mark the Sunrise keeper, Alexis Gifford, made a save and got off a quick punt that got to Julia Jaffe in the middle of the field. Jaffe laid out a beautiful overlap to Caitlin Crespo on the right flank. Crespo had a step on the Cooper City defender and brought the ball into the box and floated it over the keeper's head for the first goal of the game. At 48 minutes, Camila Neveleff took a shot that was stopped and cleared by a Cooper City defender out past the half line where the Sting's Natalie Montemorano sent the ball back to the top of the 18. The Cooper City defender was called for an intentional handling of the ball which set up a Sunrise penalty kick. Neveleff took the shot for Sunrise and sent the ball with authority to the lower left side of the net to give Sunrise the 2-0 lead. The Sting held on to win the game 2-0 and improve to 6-3. Alexis Gifford had eight saves for Sunrise and picked up her fourth shutout of the season. The girls have three more games left.
