Weekend Recap

U11s Are in Playoffs!

Sunrise, Florida (February 11, 2007) - The Sunrise U11s, a team that only had six age appropriate players in the summer, a team that had two of their key players go down for about two months with injuries in the middle of the FLUGSA season, a team that many doubted at an earlier point, has doubters no more. The U11s are headed to the FLUGSA playoffs by finishing in third place out of 13 teams with a season record of 8-3-1.

The U11s tied Miami Lakes 1-1 in a very physical game to close out the season on Saturday. Lakes was second in the league in goals with 32 going into the game, and had not been shutout all season, but Sunrise came close, only allowing a goal in the final minute. That goal tied the game, as the Sting took an earlier lead on a Dani Westerlind goal. Alexis Gifford turned in another terrific performance as goalkeeper.

Sunrise now will move on to the Final Four FLUGSA Playoffs. The team will match up with Team Boca, the team that finished in second place. The two teams met earlier in the year and the Sting won that contest 4-1. Weston is the number 1 seed and will most likely play Royal Palm Beach, although Miami Lakes and Miramar are still in it pending published results of the weekend games.

The playoffs are scheduled for February 24 in Kendall.
