U10s and U14s Win, U11s Make Finals
Gainesville, Florida (February 19, 2007) – Sunrise entered four teams in
the Gator Showcase and took away trophies for two championships and one
finalist. Both the u10 and the u14 Premier teams won the titles, the
u11s finished as a finalist.
The u14 Premier team went a perfect 5-0 in the tournament. In
preliminary play, the girls defeated Space Coast (2-0), NWFSC Force
(5-1), and the host Gainesville Glory (1-0). That set up a semi-final
match against PBU. This was another hard fought battle between the two
teams, and Sunrise won on PKs 2-1. The final was against the Manatee
Magic. Manatee advanced to the finals by tieing Naples and winning over
PBU, Jacksonville and CGSA (Georgia). In the championship, Sunrise won
2-0.
For the tournament, Tatiana Penagus led the way with five goals, Haleigh
Stremanos had three, Sarah Motta two and Melisa Camacho had one.
The u10s won the title in a rematch of the Orange Classic championship
with a 5-2 win over West Pines. Sunrise had previously won the Orange
Classic with a 1-0 score. Sunrise opened up the tournament with a win
over a good Bay United Sharks team 4-1. The game was 2-1 at half but
Sunrise scored two late in the game to put it away. The second game,
played in 38 degree weather with a wind chill of 31 degrees at 8:00 a.m.
on Sunday morning, was against Space Coast. This was the second meeting
between the two teams and Space Coast played terrific defense and the
game ended in a 1-1 tie. Sunrise won the final game in bracket play with
a 5-0 victory over Lanier Gold (Georgia).
In the championship against West Pines, Sunrise scored two goals in the
first twelve minutes. Brittany Simpson scored on a shot almost from the
corner that caught the inside of the back post and fell into the goal.
Dallas Dorosy followed with a goal that also hit the inside of the same
right post. Dorosy scored another ten minutes into the second half off
of a beautiful cross from Julia Jaffe. Pines came back to make it 3-1
scoring on a corner kick. Sunrise made it 4-1 when Simpson’s long pass
down field hit Jaffe in stride and put her in a 1v1 against the keeper.
It became 5-1 when a Jaffe cross found Dorosy in the second six and she
knocked it in. Pines scored a final goal in the closing minutes to end
the game with a 5-2 Sunrise win.
The u11s had a very good tournament and finished 3-1, losing only in the
championship game of the Gator Division. The team defeated the GSA
Adrenaline and Auburndale, then was matched up against the CFU Extreme
for what was effectively a semi-final game as both teams were 2-0. The
game was very close but Sunrise managed to win 3-2 for a shot at TCU in
the finals. The championship game was tied 1-1 until the final
15-minutes when TCU scored twice to win the game.
The u14 Select team finished 1-2 in the tournament.
The u11s and both u14 teams are in FLUGSA playoff action this weekend.
