Sunrise U14 Premier Wins FLUGSA Championship Over Kendall

Sunrise sends a league leading three teams into FLUGSA championship games

Boca Raton, Florida (February 24, 2007) – The U14 Sunrise Premier team, riding a thirteen game winning streak, knocked off Kendall 2-0 in the FLUGSA championship game at FAU. The championship win topped off a big day for Sunrise, as all three club teams in age brackets (u11-u14) for which the league has playoffs, not only made the playoffs but they all advanced to the finals, the most of any club in the league.

Kendall and Sunrise finished one-two during the regular season. Kendall finished in first with a 11-0-3 mark, Sunrise finished second with a 11-2-1 record. But for the playoffs, the teams reversed spots as Sunrise took the title.

Both teams were coming off impressive performances in President’s Day tournaments less than a week prior. Sunrise won the Gator Showcase and Kendall lost in the finals of the Score at the Shore.

To get to the championship, Kendall defeated Weston and Sunrise won over PBU 3-0 earlier in the day. As is always the case when these teams square off, the game was a close match. It was 0-0 going into the half. About ten minutes into the second half Sunrise forward Haleigh Stremanos got the ball to Tatiana Penagus who fired from about 20-yards out, the ball slid through the keeper’s hands for the goal. Later, the Kendall keeper came out of the 18 to take on Sunrise midfielder Danielle Grossman down the left side of the field. Grossman took the ball to the endline, cut in, beat the keeper and shot on an open net to give Sunrise their final goal for the 2-0 victory and championship. Goalkeeper Rebecca Rogers picked up the shutout for Sunrise.

The Sunrise u14 Select team (division II) lost to Miami Premier in the title game 2-1. Select finished first in the regular season and Miami Premier had finished second. Miami Premier scored the winning goal in the final three minutes on a free kick from 30 yards out. Sunrise advanced to the finals with a 1-0 win over Hobe Sound.

The Sunrise u11 team (division II) lost to Weston in their championship game. The girls advanced to the title game with an exciting win over Team Boca in a very close match.
