Sunrise U10s Finish With Best Record in U11 Group A Region Cup

The U10 Sting ties division I U11 Renegades for best record

Boca Raton, Florida (March 4, 2007) - The Sunrise u10 (96/97) team, playing up one year in the U11 Division II Region Cup, finished opening weekend tied with the Renegades for the best record in Group A. The Region Cup has 19 teams entered, and they are split into five groups. After opening weekend, the teams that have finished in either first or second move on to the Blue division and the teams that finished in the bottom half move on to the Orange division for the remainder of the tournament. By finishing tied with the Renegades for the best record in the group, the u10 Sting will now move on to the Blue Division quarterfinals.

The opportunity to play up with the more experienced and skilled u11 teams was something the u10s looked forward to. It gave the girls a chance to see if all of their training and practice during the year had helped them prepare for this type of challenge. The team played hard all weekend and for the most part, the players were still able to execute good ball skills and passing against the u11 competition.

Group A was composed of Sunrise, the Renegades, Miami Lakes and Coral Gables. The Sting opened up against the Renegades on a hot Saturday afternoon. The Renegades are a u11 team that played the season in division I of FLUGSA. Sunrise had no substitutes for this game as two players could not make the game. Despite these obstacles, the girls played really hard and tied the Renegades 2-2.

The second game was against Miami Lakes. Lakes was a very solid division II u11 team in FLUGSA and had the second leading offense in the league. Miami Lakes was not shutout the entire season in FLUGSA, but on Sunday morning Sunrise managed just that. The Sting defeated Lakes 1-0.

In the final game, Sunrise won over Coral Gables 5-0. Sunrise was the only team to shutout an opponent and the team did it twice.

The Renegades defeated Miami Lakes 2-1 and Gables 7-1, so both teams ended up with a 2-0-1 record. This resulted in a tie for first place. Miami Lakes finished third and Gables finished in fourth. The Renegades and Sunrise now advance in the Blue division. Miami Lakes and Gables now play in the Orange division. The Renegades scored the most goals in the Group (10), followed by Sunrise (7). Sunrise had the best defense in the Group, allowing only two goals. The Renegades allowed four goals. Even though both teams finished with identical records, the Renegades advance as the number one seed because the first tie breaker favors the teams that scored the most goals. The Sting now plays the winner of Group D in an elimination match on March 10. The winner moves on to the semi-finals.
