…And Then There Were Four

U10s Advance in U11 Region A Cup to the Final Four.  U14s move on to Blue Divison of the Region Cup

Boca Raton, Florida (March 10, 2007) – Only four teams remain out of nineteen that started in the U11 Region Cup (division II), and the Sunrise U10 (96/97) Sting will be one of the four after overcoming a 2-1 halftime deficit to defeat the Treasure Coast United u11s 3-2 in a quarterfinal match at Logger’s Run.

TCU is a big, talented and fast team and the much smaller U10 Sting had their hands (and feet) full all day. TCU recently won the Gator Showcase over the Sting’s sister u11 team 3-1. Sunrise struck first at the 3:00 mark when the first shot of the game by TCU was saved by Sting keeper Mary Amos. Amos punted the ball well past the half line and the ball bounced over the heads of the TCU defenders, this left Sunrise forward Julia Jaffe in a foot race with the TCU defense. Jaffe got to the ball first and showed great agility by striking the ball in mid air and volleying it into the top of the net to give Sunrise a 1-0 lead.

TCU struck back at 9:00, when a TCU forward beat a Sunrise defender and shot the ball past the Sunrise keeper. At 22:00 a Sunrise defender was called for a foul just outside of the 18, and TCU converted the subsequent free kick to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Despite the halftime deficit, the Sting refused to show any quit and played extremely hard the entire second half. Two minutes in Jaffe sent a through pass to Dallas Dorosy. Dorosy put the ball into the right side of the net to tie the game. Midway through the second half, TCU had a great opportunity to score with a shot almost at  point blank range, but it was right at Sunrise keeper Angie Benson. Benson, showing why she was the starting catcher for a travel softball team, caught it like it was a blazing fastball. With five minutes remaining, right back Melissa Curran got the ball close to the defensive third, and took the ball all the way into the six to score the winning goal. Curran beat four defenders along the way.

Sunrise had great play from Brittany Simpson, Rylee Simons, Sydney Talbot, Taylor Shore and Valerie Weinbrum.

Sunrise will now face Miami Premier in a semi-final match on Saturday. Miami Premier played in division I in FLUGSA. In the other semi-final match, the Renegades (FLUGSA division I) and Weston (FLUGSA division II champions) play each other. Sunrise and the Renegades were in the Group "A" bracket and played each other to a 2-2 tie in the opening game of the tournament. Group “A” was the only bracket to send two teams to the Final Four.

U14s Move On

The U14 Select team won one game and tied one to move on to the Blue division of the U14 Region A Cup in Kendall. The girls shut down Miami Strike Force 6-0 in the first match with scoring from from Kaylie (2); Alexis; Alissa; Vanessa and Caroline. Goalkeeper Marcella Vurro was injured early in the second half.

The second game of the day proved to be a tough one that required the girls to “dig deep” for enough energy in the hot sun to survive a 0 – 0 tie to Treasure Coast.  Outstanding play by Alexis Blumberg at the keeper position definitely saved the day!
