Sunrise U14 Select Girls Win Region A Championship
Plantation, Florida (March 24, 2007) - The Sunrise U14 Select girls team won the Region A Division II championship at Pine Island Field. The girls defeated Royal Palm Beach 2-1 to capture the crown. The Select girls are a first year team and had a good season in their initial year. Select finished in first place in the FLUGSA regular season and were finalists in the FLUGSA playoffs. The team now moves on to the Hackworth-Davis Cup.
The Sunrise club entered three teams in the Region Cup, in addition to the U14
girls, the U12 boys made it to the finals and the U10 girls made it to the final
four in the U11 division.
Select took an early lead over Royal Palm Beach, scoring at the 10 minute mark
when Caroline Miranda sent a pass to the right side of the box to Gilbre Rincon.
Rincon took a touch and shot the ball over the keeper's head for the 1-0 lead.
That lead held until the 40th minute when Sunrise tried to clear the ball out of
the 18 but it did not get much past that point as a Royal Palm Beach player put
it right past the Sunrise keeper to tie the game.
Sunrise scored the winning goal in the 59th minute. Select had a corner kick
that the RPB keeper knocked away from the goal. One Sunrise attacker tried to
get to it and take a shot but it got by her, but luckily for Sunrise Jackie
Llorca was right on top of the 18 and that is where the ball ended up. Llorca
one touched the ball and put it high and into the back of the net to give
Sunrise the 2-1 victory and the championship.
Morgan Sullivan was the keeper for Sunrise and had five saves. Sullivan normally
plays on the field but both the first and second goalkeeper's for Sunrise were
injured in the last few weeks, requiring Sullivan to come out of "retirement"
and play goal. She had not done so since she was a u11. She did an excellent job
in her return as goalkeeper.
