Sunrise Has Four Teams Play at the Nova Shootout
Three teams make semi's, u10s win the title
April 22, 2007 - Sunrise entered four teams in the Nova 5v5 Shootout. Three of
our four teams made it all the way to the semi-finals, and the u10 team won the
championship.
The u14 Select (92/93) team had split squads in the tournament. Both teams
finished 2-1 in bracket play to advance to the semi’s. The girls had wins over
Plantation, the Renegades (two different Renegade teams) and Cooper City. One of
the teams dropped their semi-final match to Delray and the other lost to a third
Renegade team.
The u11 team
(95/96) also had a nice performance in the tournament. The girls defeated Miami
Premier in the opener. In the second game, the team knocked off Wellington. The
girls lost the third game to the Palm Beach Soccer Academy. The team then played
the other Miami Premier team in the semi-finals. The girls played well but lost
on a late goal.
The u10 girls (96/97) won this tournament for the second year in a row. It was
the fifth straight tournament title for the u10s. The team defeated Miami
Premier in the opener. In the second game, the girls had another exciting match
with West Pines. Sunrise and West Pines always have close games. This one was close but Sunrise pulled away at the end to win
4-3. The final game was against Cooper City and the girls won that game to go
undefeated in bracket play. The semi-final against the Renegades was a real
battle. The Renegades are much improved since the last time these two teams met.
Sunrise trailed in this game 3-2 with two minutes remaining. The team tied the
game at that point to send it into overtime. Late in the second overtime, Julia
Jaffe beat three players down the left side of the field to score the golden
goal and send the team to the championship.
Surprise, surprise! The championship game was against West Pines. Making it the
third time the girls have played West Pines in a championship game in the last
few months. The teams had previously met at both the Orange Classic and the
Gator Showcase. The girls
played a masterful game and won 2-0 for the title over a very good West Pines
team.
