Red Hot Fire Burn Up Local Rivals
Sunrise, Florida (September 17, 2007) – The red-hot Sunrise Fire u15 (92/93)
girls burned through the opposition this weekend knocking off three local rivals
to finish up the early season in the Florida State League as the only undefeated
team.
The girls had a doubleheader on Saturday with Plantation and Team Boca. The Fire
defeated the Eagles 1-0 when Haleigh Stremanos knocked in a goal set up by a
Tatiana Penagus shot. Goalkeeper Rebecca Rogers picked up the shutout. Later,
Sunrise knocked off Team Boca 3-1.
In a Monday night game, the Fire completed the weekend sweep with a 3-1 win over
the Weston Fury. Sunrise took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a great one touch
volley by Danielle Grossman. Weston tied the match as a direct kick rolled off a
Sunrise defender into the back of the net. A hand ball in the box gave Sunrise a
PK which Stremanos converted to make it 2-1. In the closing minutes, Penagus
took the ball almost the entire field to put the game away at 3-1.
The u15 Select (92/93) team was all over Cooper City in a Friday night game. Led
by Danielle Kripitzer (two goals) Sunrise slayed the Cobras 7-1. Morgan Sullivan
was the keeper.
The u11 Sting (96/97) also turned in a nice performance against quality u12
teams. On Saturday, the girls played terrific and defeated a good TCU team 4-1.
Sofia De la Puente led the way with a pair of goals. Mary Amos and Julia Jaffe
added one a piece. Sara Bowden played well in the goal. On Sunday, the girls had
another battle on their hands against a determined Jupiter squad. The Sunrise
defense led by Brittany Simpson and Melissa Curran continued to be stellar, and
had some added help by good midfield play by Valerie Weinbrum. Sunrise held a
1-0 lead but Jupiter came back to tie the game and it ended 1-1.
The u12 Sting (95/96) played a close game on Sunday against Boca United. BU won
the game 1-0 but the u12s played well and are improving.
The u13 boys played on Saturday against TCU and won 4-1.
