Three of four Sunrise teams win championships at FAU
Boca Raton, Florida (April 6, 2007) - Sunrise entered four teams in the FAU
5v5 and three of the teams won the championships. The u13 boys, the u9 girls and
a u11 split squad team all won. A second u11 split squad team lost in a tight
game to a combination team from two other clubs. Sunrise has been a big
supporter of the FAU tournament for many years because it is a great way for the
players to improve, while at the same time supporting the FAU soccer program.
U13
BOYS WIN
The u13 boys, playing in this tournament for the first time, defeated the
Boynton Beach Knights 3-2, then defeated two Plantation teams (2-1 and 5-1). In
the finals Sunrise again defeated the Eagles by a 6-1 score for the title.
U9 GIRLS MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW
After claiming the Naples 3v3 Championship, the Sunrise Sting U9 Girls were
ready for their next challenge. Playing in their first 5v5 tournament, the girls
were ready to claim another championship.
Their first game was against the Miramar Strikers. The Sting came out a little
cautious playing in this unfamiliar format. It didn't take the Sting Girls long
to start controlling the game. The defense played incredible keeping the
Strikers off the scoreboard.
The offense came together and were able to put in 2 goals giving The Sting a 2-0
victory.
The second game was against West Pines United Black. On a roll, the Sunrise
Sting offense and defense were unstoppable. The offense was amazing. The Sting
were able to score 4 goals while their defense posted another shutout en route
to a 4-0 win.
The third game was against Wellington Wave Blue. The Sting Girls were really
starting to heat up. The offense exploded for 5 goals and the defense held the
Wave to 3 goals. The Sting won 5-3 and earned a trip to the Championship game.
The championship match was against a very good Wellington Wave White Team. Both
teams were playing very well. The game was very exciting and close but the Sting
offense was able to get one by the Wave goalie for the only score of the game.
The defense again came up big for the Sting, posting their third shutout of the
day en route to a 1-0 win and the championship.
U11s Play Well
The u11s entered two split squad teams into the tournament. The girls won the
White division in easy fashion, going 4-0 with wins over Miami Premier, Royal
Palm, Weston Wild and Boca United. The other team finished 2-1 and failed to
advance. The girls won big over Boca United Gold 5-1, then defeated PBSA 10-1,
but ran into some problems facing a combination Treasure Coast/Delray team. The
girls were down 1-0 at halftime, scored two in the second half, only to give up
two goals in the final few minutes to lose the game 3-2. It was a tough loss
because the girls played so hard to get back into the game and take the lead. It
was another lesson on the long, and oftentimes, difficult path called progress.
